It may seem that I have fallen off the face of the earth, but alas I have not. [Feb. 25th, 2007|12:35 pm]

I have been trying to rewrite this article for JAMA for over a week now. It is an absolute mess. The whole point of it is that health care is collapsing and that with the way things are going this will happen sometime before the year 2013, from what I gather most likely March of 2012. This is of course completely disconcerting. Now if only I can help my boss prove this hypothesis in 7 pages instead of 14. This task is herculean, because so far all my rewrites have only cut it down to 12 pages. Have I mentioned I've been working on it for over a week. The deadline is fast approaching, and of course it's not a real deadline mostly him asking me "Where are you with that JAMA article?" and me responding "I'm just polishing right now" This is a complete lie. Unless, one considers polishing, taking paragraphs that would come off as sexist, elitist, and downright archaeic and transforming them into something that is mildy progressive and still manages to come to the same horrific conclusion. The worst part is that in 4 hours I'm hosting an Oscar party. I should have never agreed to that. I still need to go to the grocery store and then there is the laundry, the massive amounts of laundry that I have neglected in leiu of JAMA and the collapse of health care. Shit what was I thinking agreeing to host an Oscar Party. The house probably needs to be swept too. Fuck. 1000 finished surgeons a year really isn't high number because only 400 of them are going to do the bulk of the procedures and only 100 of that 400 will work in rural areas, where community hospitals have been shut down and people drive miles upon miles to get to an emergency room. Healthcare is already halfway collapsed. Why am I writing in livejournal? I do not deserve a break. Not at all. I need to be writing about healthcare or worrying about the Oscar party. I certainly shouldn't have chosen this moment to venture back to livejournal land after all these months...this is not the time. I need to hurry up and finish so healthcare doesn't collapse before the article is finished. I MUST WRITE RIGHT NOW!

April 13, 2006

Dear Abigail Smith,

Thank you very much for your interest in Teach For America and for the time and effort you invested in interviewing with us. I am very sorry to inform you that, after careful consideration of your candidacy, we will not be extending you an offer to join the 2006 corps.

Your initiative in applying to Teach For America demonstrates your commitment to expanding opportunities for children and effecting social change. While we would like to offer all candidates a path to realizing these aims, we know that Teach For America is not a fit for everyone. Over time we have developed a set of selection criteria that helps us select those most likely to be successful in our particular program. We use the written application, transcripts, letter(s) of recommendation, and all parts of the interview day as lenses through which to view evidence of this criteria.

We know that you have the potential to make a significant contribution to meeting our country's pressing social needs, and we encourage you to pursue other ways to make a difference. To assist you in your pursuit, we have posted on our website a list of recommended resources. If you also are interested in being contacted by other education and service-oriented organizations that may wish to recruit Teach For America applicants for similar opportunities, you can complete a short form here.

Although this e-mail may bring disappointment, I hope that your experience with Teach For America thus far has been positive. If you would like to share any anonymous feedback on our admissions process, we welcome your reflections and suggestions here.

Lastly, I am sorry that we are not able to provide individual feedback on admissions decisions, given that we do not have the resources to handle the volume of potential requests. We attempt to minimize the frustration we know this can cause by being upfront about this policy in our application.

Again, thank you for the energy you invested in our admissions process. I wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Strange Fact of the Day [Nov. 4th, 2005|12:18 am]

So a homeless guy enrolled in my Hampshire class today. He walked right in with a giant price right bag that was filled with all of his belongings, he grabbed the course pack and took a seat. According to our professor he'll be with us for the rest of the sememster. Now I think it's great that some random homeless man can take college courses, it just is not your everyday sort of event. But it might be at Hampshire... because Emily, the Smithies, and I were the only ones who found it out of the ordinary.

But first... I have several things I must do.

Work out...it's very rainy so it's a gym day, which is sad because I've really been enjoying runs around lower lake.

Read Ariel-or some of Ariel rather

Email Nigel Alderman some stuff about Ariel

Start my paper about The Golden Notebook

I must do all of these things...no fun may be had until I do.

A bit of a rant... [Oct. 13th, 2005|03:19 pm]

[Current Music |Stephen Kellogg]

I can't handle obnoxious Amherst fuckwads who don't even know me, yet assume that they're smarter than me. In fact I believe that is what defines arrogance.

From its conception feminist theory has presented society with the very basic notion that women are people. Just like the civil rights movement presented society with the notion that blacks are people.

But you know what... maybe he's right and that's all just a bunch of rhetoric...a boatload of crap. My God, I feel like I'm experiencing time travel.
